Planning your pilgrimage to Lord Ayyappa's shrine? Honestly, this trip is not quite like any other route in Kerala. The roads wind through rubber estates and forest belts, the crowd gets thicker the closer you get to Pamba, and there are a few rules along the way that catch first-time pilgrims off guard almost every season. From Kochi, the drive covers roughly 160 to 175 kilometres and takes about 4.5 to 5 hours — the exact time really comes down to which route your driver picks and how heavy the Mandala season crowd is that day.
Here's something worth knowing before you book. Taxis can't park at Pamba itself. Your driver drops you there, then heads back to Nilakkal — about 18 kilometres away — and waits for you there. Coming back, you will take a shuttle or bus from Pamba to Nilakkal to rejoin your car.
